Monaco: Giacomo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini, born in Lucca (Italy) on December 22, 1858, is considered as one of the greatest composers of the pivotal 19th and 20th centuries. Once church organist, he became inspired to be an opera composer during a performance of Verdi's "Aida" and enrolled the Milan Conservatory. "Manon Lescaut", his 3rd opera, launched his successful career, confirmed with "La Boheme", "Tosca", "Madame Butterfly" and "The Swallow", premiered at the Opera of Monte-Carlo in 1917. "The Girl of the Golden West", audacious opera conducted by Toscanini, was firstly world performed at the Metropolitan Opera of New-York. He died in 1924 and left his final opera "Turandot" unfinished. Date of issue: 7 December 2007
