Faroe Islands: Mythical Places

All over the Nordic World there are places, which for some reason have been regarded as haunted – inhabited by supernatural beings or plain sacred.

This is also the case on the Faroe Islands, where the supernatural creatures lived in the outback. It is especially geological and geographical abnormalities which have inspired people's imagination. A foot shaped print in a rock could be the place where the giant set off in a mighty jump – deep canyons appeared as a result of fights of mythical proportions between ancient giants – and strange rocks and formations may have been fossilized trolls or the homes of the elves. Such places can be found everywhere, and there is not a village or town which does not have some places, inhabited by supernatural creatures.

In this third joint Nordic stamp issue, the Faroe Islands present two examples from the rich Faroese mythical world: Alvheyggur (The Elf Hill) near Haldarsvik and Klovningasteinur (The Split Boulder) from Leirvik.

Date of issue 27 March 2008
