Ireland Releases Europa Letter Writing Issue
On June 9, 2008, An Post issued two Europa stamps with the theme of letter writing.
The stamps and First Day Cover were designed by Bold Design and feature cute illustrations of a boy and girl writing a letter to each other.
55c and 82c set of 2 stamps
Since 1993, Europa stamps have been issued under the aegis of PostEurop, the Association of European public postal operators, but the tradition of Europa stamps stretches back to 1956, when the first Europa stamp featured a design showing a tower in the form of the six letters of the word Europa. From that year until 1973, a common design was used by participating countries. From 1974 onwards, each country has issued its own stamps, based on a shared theme. This year's theme is Letter Writing.
'I have only made this letter rather long because I have not had time to make it shorter'
One of the most famous quotes in the world is about the writing of letters, which shows how important letters are to people. Even in the era of email and text messaging letter writing continues to thrive in the 21st Century.
Nothing we have come up with since the first letter was written can compare to this mode of communication. What else is as personal, as enthralling as a handwritten letter from someone we care about? What else can give such a heightened sense of anticipation?
Love letters apart, there are many other types of letters that are important. For some of us our first letter will have been to Santa Claus, telling that fine gentleman what we would like for Christmas. Then there are letters from family members overseas, which have been especially significant for many Irish families over the years.
All in all, letters have played a great part in the history of human communication. Even in today's world of instant electronic messages, they are - and will continue to be irreplaceable.
The stamps and First Day Cover were designed by Bold Design and feature cute illustrations of a boy and girl writing a letter to each other. As is normal for our Europa issues, the stamps are produced in specially-designed 10 stamp sheetlets.
