New stamps to mark boat race

POS Malaysia will issue a special collection of commemorative stamps on Aug 1 to mark the International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championship 2008.

The stamps and miniature sheets come in three designs, which depict the dragon boat race as a sport that promotes positive values, including teamwork and friendship.

The stamps, which measure 40mm × 30mm, are printed in sheets of 20 on SPM watermark, phosphor coated paper. They are available in three denominations – 30sen, 50sen and RM1.

Members of the public can also buy the miniature sheet, 120mm ×60mm in size, at RM2.

Meanwhile, folders, priced at RM5.50 each, are only available at selected post offices.

Pos Malaysia Berhad business development and marketing (philately) manager Yasmin Ramli said this would be an opportunity for stamp lovers and collectors to add to their collection.

“The price is reasonable, and they can pick it up in any post office convenient to them. Stamp collectors abroad can obtain our stamps through online sale or they could get through their friends here in Malaysia,” she said.

Yasmin added that Pos Malaysia would showcase these stamps in a stamp exhibition in Beijing from Aug 7 to 18 to promote Malaysian stamps to collectors from other countries.

The International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championship 2008 will be held at the Teluk Bahang Dam in Penang from July 31 to Aug 3. This is the first time Malaysia is hosting the exciting event.

Dragon boat racing is a team sport that originates from China. The dragon boat is long and narrow and combines the power, speed and endurance of 12 or 20 rowers. During races, the boats are always rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails, and the members of each team can be seen rowing with full concentration in a synchronised movement, led by a drummer.

Pos Malaysia Berhad executive director Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid said Pos Malaysia was proud of the opportunity to be part of the celebration of the IDBF Club Crew World Championship 2008, which is one of the most prestigious dragon boat championships in the region.

“This is the first time that Pos Malaysia is issuing a collection of stamps and First Day Cover featuring dragon boats as well as participants in action, and we hope that customers will take this opportunity to purchase the stamps and learn more about dragon boat racing in Malaysia and the Asian region,” he added.
