Sport for Peace - Games of the XXIX Olympics, Beijing, China

On 8 August 2008, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue a set of six commemorative stamps in mini-sheet format on the theme “Sport for Peace”. The stamp issue coincides with the OLYMPIC EXPO BEIJING 2008 which is being held in Beijing, China from 8 to 18 August in conjunction with the Games of the XXIX Olympics. Three souvenir sheets and a Beijing Personalized stamp sheet will also be released on the same day.

According to the Olympic Charter, established by Pierre de Coubertin, the goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

Designer:
Romero Britto

The overall theme and slogan for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is “One World One Dream” which fully reflects the essence and the universal values of the Olympic spirit -- Unity, Friendship, Progress, Harmony, Participation and Dream. It expresses the common wishes of people all over the world, inspired by the Olympic ideals, to strive for a bright future of humankind. In spite of the differences in colors, languages and races, we share the charm and joy of the Olympic Games, and together we seek the ideal of humankind for peace. We belong to the same world and we share the same aspirations and dreams.

The Olympic Games have always brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles. The upcoming Games of the XXIX Olympics in Beijing will carry on the tradition of featuring athletes from all over the world who continue to promote the Olympic spirit.

The Artist

UNPA has commissioned the world-renowned South American artist Romero Britto to create six pieces of original artwork to design the stamps.

A modern day pop culture phenomenon, Romero Britto, has created contemporary masterpieces with his vibrant colors, bold patterns and a continuous message of hope. “An art that is too important not to share ” says Britto – one that elevates the soul and nourishes the heart.

Britto’s paintings and sculptures are currently exhibited in more than 100 galleries worldwide. His works are in the private collections’ of individuals such as Eileen Guggenheim, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Prince Albert of Monaco and Michael Jordan. His corporate commissions have been numerous since the celebrated Absolut Vodka campaign that launched his career. Britto’s creative touch and infectious energy have been sought after by such brands like Evian, Pepsi, Audi, Nicole Miller, Technomarine, Microsoft and the NFL.

Most recently Britto created his second collection of UN Stamps. The new collection commissioned to commemorate the “Sports for Peace” campaign will be used for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Additionally, in both 2005 and 2006 Britto joined a stellar group of international artists selected to participate in the Florence Biennale. His acclaimed public works include the King Tut Exhibit in Hyde Park - in which Britto created a critically acclaimed 45-foot pyramid.

Whether serving as a panelist at the World Economic Forum or creating a spectacular Pre-show performance with Cirque du Soleil during Superbowl XLI, his immeasurable talent and creativity have been clearly evident since his childhood. Never forgetting his humble beginnings, Britto has donated his tremendous talent, time and endless enthusiasm to over 1,000 charitable organizations worldwide. In 2007, The Romero Britto Foundation was established to provide support to individuals and organizations who work to create, encourage, promote and preserve education and humanitarian- based initiatives benefiting children around the world.

This is Britto’s second set of stamp designs for the United Nations. In 1999, he also designed a set of six commemorative stamps on the theme “Education – Keystone to the 21st Century”.
